The Team

The staff of the IfB work with enthusiasm in interdisciplinary teams on the central questions of building materials science.

The mission of the Institute of Building Materials is to explore the scientific fundamentals of the function of building materials—particularly cement-based materials such as mortar and concrete—to develop new, highly sustainable and function-optimized materials, and to describe the short- and long-term behaviour of these materials.

In the area of fundamental research, the institute is particularly distinguished for its investigations into the fatigue behaviour and creep of concrete, and currently holds the speaker role in the DFG Priority Programme 2020. Another major focus lies in studying the flow and processing behaviour of fresh construction materials, where the institute is strongly represented in the DFG Priority Programme 2005. A central research area in this field is the digitalization of concrete technology, from production and monitoring through to structural design. For example, we are working on the development of novel sensor systems and AI-based, self-learning control methods.

Applied research covers a broad range of topics related to performance characteristics relevant to construction sites, such as mixture stability, robustness, and pumpability of concrete, as well as project-specific methods for durability verification and service-life design—particularly regarding acid and frost resistance. It also extends to questions concerning the use of construction materials in offshore wind energy structures, especially so-called “grouted joints.”

In teaching, the institute provides students of civil and environmental engineering with the fundamentals and advanced topics of building materials science, concrete technology, and the repair of concrete structures.

The entire team of the Institute of Building Materials is pleased to serve as your partner for exciting fundamental research and for solving complex practical problems. We work closely with the Materials Testing Institute Hannover and are represented in numerous national and international standardization committees and boards.
